Tamino is a young prince who is given a magic flute in Mozart’s last opera, The Magic Flute. The flute has the power to give protection, summon aid, and change sorrow into joy. Tamino is ultimately victorious in the story, and Bisbee gives him a nod of respect in the form of a bronze statue in Grassy Park. The statue was created by the late Alvin Sandler, an accomplished artist who resided in Bisbee for over three decades. Sandler’s sculpture of Tamino is dedicated to his brother, Joel—but it also perfectly captures the spirit of this town, where music brings joy to so many of us.
